Which AI tools do you need to build a website?

9 stages, 29 tools, updated

Typing one sentence and getting a working site back is real now, and for a simple business page it can be enough. The trouble starts on day two. The generated pages say things your business does not offer, the photos are placeholders, nobody set a page title, the contact form sends messages nowhere and the domain still points at a parking page. A website is nine small jobs, and the prompt only does one of them.

AI helps at every one of those jobs, in different ways. It proposes a sitemap from a brief, draws wireframes, generates pages, drafts copy, makes a logo, audits pages for search problems and answers visitors in a chat widget. The decisions stay with you: what the site is for, what you can truthfully claim, which pages you actually need, and whether the result works on a phone held by someone in a hurry. Below, the stages run in the order a careful builder follows, each with the tools from our directory that do that stage's job.

Who this is for Small business owners, freelancers and founders putting up a first site, and designers or agencies who want to speed up client work without handing every decision to a generator.

Start here

A short route for a first site: one tool to plan, one to build and one to check the result. Each sits in the stage it is listed under, and the order is a route, not a ranking.

  1. WhimsicalPlanning and sitemap

Describe your business in one prompt, generate a mind map of pages and delete every page you cannot fill.

  2. Wix.comBuilding the site

Generate a first version from your page list, then replace every placeholder sentence and image with your own.

  3. diibSearch engine optimization

Enter the published address, run the scan and work through the quick fixes it lists in plain language.

  1. Stage 1: Planning and sitemap

Write down who the site is for and what a visitor should do there, then list the pages, how they link together and what each one must contain, before any design starts.

    What AI does here
Turn a written brief into a proposed sitemap and wireframes, or expand a rough idea into a mind map of pages and user flows.
    What AI can’t do here
Know your customers or your offer. A generated sitemap is a generic starting point until you remove the pages you have nothing to say on.

    Relume

Takes a written brief and produces a sitemap, wireframes and a style guide for a marketing site.

AI website builder that goes from a written brief to sitemap, wireframes and a marketing site you can publish or export.

  2. Stage 2: Design and wireframes

Decide layout, typography, color and the look of key pages. Collect references, sketch wireframes, then produce mockups detailed enough to build from or to brief an AI builder.

    What AI does here
Generate editable wireframes and screens from a prompt, sketch or screenshot, show several visual directions at once and supply design prompts for AI builders.
    What AI can’t do here
Give the site a point of view. Generated layouts look alike, so the choices that make a brand recognizable still come from a person.

    Uizard

Generates a multi-screen, editable prototype from a short text prompt and converts screenshots or hand-drawn sketches into editable screens.

AI-assisted UI design tool that generates editable wireframes, mockups and prototypes from text, screenshots or sketches.

  3. Stage 3: Building the site

Turn the plan into real pages: generate or assemble the layout, set up navigation, make it responsive, connect a content system if the site will be updated often.

    What AI does here
Generate a first version of a whole site from a description, then apply changes you ask for in chat or let you edit visually.
    What AI can’t do here
Test itself on your visitors' devices or keep the site maintained. Someone still has to own updates, backups and broken links.

    Wix.com

Generates a site from a written prompt or template, then lets you edit by drag and drop or by asking its AI agent.

  4. Stage 4: Writing the copy

Write headlines, service descriptions, the about page, calls to action and the small text on buttons and forms, in a voice that sounds like the business and says only what is true.

    What AI does here
Draft page sections and headline variants from a brief, match a tone from a writing sample and catch grammar and style slips.
    What AI can’t do here
Supply the facts. Prices, guarantees, credentials and customer results must come from you, and invented ones can create legal trouble.

    Dorik

Writes page content from prompts inside the builder, in the language you choose, so draft copy lands directly in the layout it belongs to.

  5. Stage 5: Logo and images

Create or commission a logo, choose a small set of consistent images and illustrations, prepare them at the right sizes and confirm you hold the rights to use each one.

    What AI does here
Generate logo concepts from a company name, produce illustrations and icons in one consistent style, and supply stock-style pictures.
    What AI can’t do here
Photograph your real premises, team or products. Visitors notice generic imagery, and a generated logo is not automatically unique or protectable.

    Looka

Generates logo concepts from a company name, lets you adjust one in an editor and delivers files including vector formats.

AI logo maker that also builds a brand kit with matching business cards, social assets and templates.

  6. Stage 6: Search engine optimization

Research what people search for, give every page a clear title and description, fix technical problems such as broken links and slow pages, and plan content that answers real questions.

    What AI does here
Audit a site and list issues in priority order, suggest keywords with search metrics, and track how search engines and AI assistants mention the site.
    What AI can’t do here
Promise rankings. Results take time to build, and pages published in bulk without review tend to help nobody, including you.

  7. Stage 7: Chat, forms and social proof

Give visitors a way to reach you and a reason to trust you: a contact or booking form that actually delivers, a chat widget if you can staff it, and real customer reviews.

    What AI does here
Build a form from a description, answer routine questions in a chat widget from your own help content, and keep review widgets updated.
    What AI can’t do here
Replace a prompt human reply on anything unusual. An unanswered chat bubble does more harm than having none.

  8. Stage 8: Domain, hosting and deploy

Choose and register a domain, pick hosting that suits how the site was built, connect the two with SSL, set up email on the domain and publish.

    What AI does here
Suggest available names for a business idea with a trademark check, and deploy a project from a repository or a chat description.
    What AI can’t do here
Clear a name legally. An automated trademark lookup is a first screen, and renewals and DNS records remain your responsibility.

    Atom

Generates domain and business name ideas from a keyword or description, checks trademarks and registers the chosen domain.

Domain marketplace and registrar with AI tools for generating, testing and contesting business names.

    From $20/moView tool
  9. Stage 9: Testing, monitoring and analytics

Check the site in several browsers and on real phones before launch, then keep watching: uptime, errors, which pages people visit and where they give up.

    What AI does here
Scan pages for accessibility issues, alert you when the site stops responding and answer plain-language questions about visitor behavior.
    What AI can’t do here
Decide what a good result is for your site, or collect visitor data lawfully for you. Consent and privacy notices are your job.

    BrowserStack

Realistic expectations

Generated text can state things that are not true
A builder will invent services, opening hours, testimonials and guarantees to fill a layout. Read every sentence before publishing. Rules on fake reviews and unsupported advertising claims vary by country, so check the ones that apply where you trade.
Rights to logos and images
Licenses differ by tool and by plan: some restrict commercial use of images made on a no-cost tier, and a generated logo may resemble others. Whether a logo can be registered as a trademark is decided by the trademark office in each country. Check the terms before you print anything.
You may not be able to take the site with you
Many builders host what they generate and offer limited or no code export. If moving later matters, check export options, who holds the domain and where your content lives before you start.
Privacy, cookies and accessibility
Analytics, chat widgets and session recording collect personal data. Privacy, cookie-consent and accessibility rules vary by country and by type of business, so check which apply to you. Automated scans find some problems, not all of them.

FAQs

Can AI build a complete website from one prompt?

It can produce a complete-looking one. Several builders here generate pages, text and images from a description and publish them. What you get is a draft: the wording is generic, facts may be invented and the structure may not match your business. Plan on spending most of your time editing content, checking mobile layout and connecting the form, domain and analytics.

Will Google rank a website made with AI?

Google's guidance on generative AI content does not ban it: what counts is whether a page is useful, original and accurate. The same guidance warns that generating many pages without adding value for users may violate its spam policy on scaled content abuse, and asks you to fact-check AI output, including titles and descriptions. Ranking also depends on competition, links and time, so no tool can promise a position.

Do I own the site an AI builder makes for me?

That depends on the builder's terms. Check three things: whether you can export the code or only host it there, who is the registered owner of the domain, and what license covers generated images and text on your plan. If the answers are unclear, register the domain yourself with a separate registrar.

Should I add an AI chatbot to a small business site?

Only if it has something reliable to answer from and someone reads the conversations. A chat assistant trained on your own help pages can handle opening hours and routine questions out of hours. Without good source content it guesses, and a wrong answer about price or availability costs more than a missed chat.
