About Shadows Into Light

Shadows Into Light is a handwriting font that looks like neat print lettering done with a fine marker. The letters are upright, narrow and not joined; ascenders and descenders are long compared with the small lowercase bodies, and every stroke keeps the same thickness and ends in a rounded tip. Shapes vary slightly from letter to letter, as in real writing: the capitals differ in width, the t carries a long crossbar, and the numerals sit at uneven heights. The family has a single Regular style and is not a variable font. Its 352 glyphs cover the Latin and Latin Extended character sets. Kimberly Geswein designed the font, which was added to Google Fonts in 2011 and is licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Shadows Into Light works

Quotes on social media
A sentence in the narrow, unjoined letters reads as a handwritten note on an image or story.
Annotations and callouts
Thin, even strokes work as hand-drawn labels and side notes on diagrams, screenshots and slides.
Informal invitations
Party, baby-shower and classroom invitations gain a personal tone from the marker-like writing.
Scrapbook and journal layouts
The slightly uneven letters match photo captions, planner pages and printable stickers.
Blog and newsletter headings
Short headings in Shadows Into Light contrast with a plain text face used for the paragraphs.

Things to know

One style
Shadows Into Light has Regular 400 only: no bold, no italic.
Small lowercase, long extenders
The lowercase bodies are small next to the ascenders and descenders, so the font needs a larger size than a text face to stay readable.
Letters do not connect
This is print-style handwriting, not cursive; each letter stands separately.
