About Beth Ellen

Beth Ellen is a handwriting typeface that reproduces one person's cursive. The official notes say Rob Jelinski, responsible for art direction and design, and Alyson Fraser Diaz, responsible for typography and functionality, built it in 2018 from the penmanship of Rob's mother, Beth Ellen Jelinski, who died of cancer in March 2017. Jelinski asked that people who use the font send a short note to someone they love. In the specimen the lowercase leans right and joins from letter to letter, the stroke edges stay slightly ragged like a felt pen on paper, and the capitals are looped school-style forms, including an F and T with a wavy top bar. There is one Regular style with 254 glyphs. Coverage is the basic Latin subset: English, German, Spanish, Italian and the Nordic languages are covered, and French lacks only the rare capital Ÿ.

Where Beth Ellen works

Personal notes and letters
The font was drawn from real note-writing penmanship, so a short message reads like something written by hand.
Greeting and thank-you cards
Joined lowercase and looped capitals carry a name or a one-line wish at a large size.
Memorial and family projects
Its origin as a tribute to a parent's handwriting fits scrapbooks, family recipe pages and remembrance cards.
Quotes on social graphics
The ragged pen edges stay visible at display sizes and give a quote a hand-written texture.
