About Annie Use Your Telescope

Annie Use Your Telescope is a handwriting typeface drawn from a real person's hand. Kimberly Geswein writes in the official notes that she asked a photography student for a sample of her writing and turned it into this font; the student chose the name as a nod to the band Jack's Mannequin. The specimen shows a fine, single-thickness line like that of a ballpoint or fineliner. Letters stand upright and are not joined, capitals are tall and narrow, and small irregularities remain: the z and 7 are crossed, the 4 is open at the top and stems vary slightly in length and angle. The family consists of one Regular file with 355 glyphs for Latin and Latin Extended. It is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Annie Use Your Telescope works

Handwritten notes in a layout
The fineliner-thin line reads as a margin note or annotation beside photographs and diagrams.
Scrapbook and photo captions
Narrow letters fit a caption under a picture, in keeping with the font's origin in a photography student's hand.
Informal cards and tags
Unjoined upright letters stay easy to read on gift tags, thank-you cards and place cards.
Personal blog headers
A short title in this hand gives a journal or recipe page a diary-like tone.

Things to know

One thin style
There is a single Regular 400 file and no bold. On dark or busy backgrounds the fine line needs a large size to stay visible.
Printed, not cursive
The letters do not connect. Anyone looking for joined-up writing needs a script face.
Latin Extended is included
The glyph set reaches beyond basic Latin, with the letters needed for Turkish, Polish, Czech and Hungarian among others.
