About Inter

Inter is a sans serif family designed for reading on computer screens. Its lowercase letters are tall in relation to the capitals, which keeps small text legible in menus, tables and body copy. The family is built as a variable font with two axes: weight, from 100 to 900, and optical size, from 14 to 32, so the same family can be tuned for small labels and for larger headings. Roman and italic styles each come in nine named weights, 18 styles in total. The fonts hold 2,926 glyphs and cover Latin, Cyrillic, Greek and Vietnamese character sets. OpenType features include a slashed zero, tabular figures and contextual alternates that adapt punctuation to neighbouring characters. Rasmus Andersson leads the Inter project, and the files are published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Inter works

App and web interfaces
The tall lowercase and the 14 to 32 optical size axis keep labels, buttons and form fields readable at small sizes.
Dashboards and tables
Tabular figures line numbers up in columns, and the slashed zero separates 0 from the letter O in codes and IDs.
Long reading on screens
Regular and Medium with their italics cover body text, emphasis and captions in documentation and articles.
Brand systems that need range
Weights from Thin to Black give one family enough contrast for headlines, subheads and small print.
Products in several languages
Latin, Cyrillic, Greek and Vietnamese character sets let one typeface serve several language versions of a product.

Fonts that pair with Inter

Crimson Pro Serif

Inter is sans serif and Crimson Pro is serif (8 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Zilla Slab Slab Serif

Inter is sans serif and Zilla Slab is slab serif (5 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Roboto Mono Monospace

Roboto Mono is a monospace family (7 weights) for code and figures next to Inter as the text face.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.

Things to know

Two variable files
The download contains one variable file for the roman styles and one for the italics. Each holds the full 100 to 900 weight range and the optical size axis.
Optical size runs from 14 to 32
Applications that support automatic optical sizing choose a value from the font size; elsewhere the axis can be set by hand.
No separate static files in the package
The package holds the variable fonts only. Static files for individual weights are available from the official source.
