Almendra is a serif typeface built on calligraphy, with a style that the official notes relate to chancery and gothic hands. Strokes look cut with a broad pen: curves break into angles, stems lean slightly, and terminals end in wedge shapes. In the specimen the capital A carries a top bar that overhangs to the left, the numerals are old-style figures that rise and drop around the lowercase, and the Bold is markedly darker and more compact. The notes say the design was meant for long texts, particularly literature for young children, and that its details come forward at very large sizes. The family has two weights, Regular 400 and Bold 700, each with an italic, four styles in total, and is not a variable font. Each font has 368 glyphs for Latin and Latin Extended. Ana Sanfelippo designed Almendra, published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.
