About Rock Salt

Rock Salt is a handwriting typeface that keeps the rough edge of a felt-tip marker. According to the official notes it was hand-crafted with such markers for a personal look. The specimen shows capitals only: the uppercase keys give tall, sprawling letters, and the lowercase keys give a second, lower and wider set of capitals, so mixed-case typing produces a big-and-small capital rhythm. Outlines are slightly ragged, strokes overshoot their joins, and the letters lean and tilt irregularly. Lines also need a lot of vertical room because the capitals reach far above and below. Google Fonts credits Sideshow; the name table gives Font Diner, Inc DBA Sideshow as manufacturer and Squid as designer. There is one Regular style and no variable file. The 228 glyphs sit in the Latin subset and serve Western European languages and Estonian. The license is the Apache License 2.0.

Where Rock Salt works

Headings with a marker-pen feel
Ragged outlines make a title look written by hand on a poster, flyer or zine cover.
Labels and annotations on photos
A few words in the rough capitals read as a note scrawled across a picture or map.
Surf, skate and outdoor graphics
The leaning, uneven capitals suit stickers, T-shirts and event graphics with an informal voice.
Quotes on social posts
Typing in mixed case alternates tall and low capitals, which gives a short quote a lively texture.
