About Aref Ruqaa

Aref Ruqaa is an Arabic typeface that sets out to reproduce Ruqaa, a classical calligraphic hand, in font form. Alongside the Arabic it carries a Latin alphabet taken from AMS Euler, with the spacing adjusted for running text instead of mathematics; Hermann Zapf is listed among the family's designers. In the specimen that Latin is upright yet clearly pen-written: strokes swell and taper, stems flare at their ends in place of formal serifs, the A has a pointed, leaning apex, and y and z end in curved calligraphic tails. Two weights are available, Regular and Bold, with no italic. The fonts hold 739 glyphs covering Arabic and the basic Latin subset. Abdullah Aref is named as designer in the fonts, and Khaled Hosny, who works in Cairo, leads the project. The license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Aref Ruqaa works

Arabic headlines and titles
The Ruqaa model gives titles the look of handwritten calligraphy, with Bold for the main line.
Book covers and posters
Two weights let a title and an author line share the same calligraphic style.
Bilingual invitations and certificates
The pen-written Latin was chosen to accompany the Arabic, so names in both scripts keep a handwritten tone.
Short Latin display lines
On their own, the flared upright Latin letters give a heading a calligraphic look without a slant.
