About Bellefair

Bellefair is a serif typeface with a light build and a small lowercase. In the specimen the ascenders of b, d, f and l rise far above a low x-height, the capitals are narrow and fine-stroked, the serifs are thin and sharply cut, and the numerals are slim and stand at capital height. The result is a delicate texture that needs size before its thin strokes show clearly. Bellefair began as a Latin design by Nick Shinn; a Hebrew alphabet by Liron Lavi Turkenich was then drawn within the same project so that the two scripts agree in style, weight and overall colour. The project is led by Shinntype, a type foundry in Toronto, Canada. There is one Regular style, with no italic or bold, and 483 glyphs covering Latin, Latin Extended and Hebrew. The license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Bellefair works

Magazine and book titles
Thin serifs and tall ascenders come into their own at title sizes on covers, openers and section heads.
Hebrew and Latin headings
The Hebrew alphabet was drawn to match the Latin, so a bilingual title keeps one weight and colour across both scripts.
Menus and invitations
The narrow capitals and light strokes suit names, course headings and dates printed at generous sizes.
Wordmarks
A single word in Bellefair capitals gives a brand name a fine-stroked, narrow serif signature.
Pull quotes
A sentence or two set large shows the contrast between the small lowercase and its long ascenders.

Things to know

One style
Bellefair has only Regular 400. There is no italic and no bold, so emphasis has to come from size, colour or a second family.
Small x-height
The lowercase is low in relation to the capitals, so Bellefair looks smaller than most serifs at the same point size.
Two spellings of one designer
The official description writes Liron Lavi Turkenich; the font's own name table spells the surname Turkenic.
