About Antic Didone

Antic Didone is a serif typeface that Santiago Orozco drew for the headlines of periodicals. It belongs to the Antic Type System, a group of three related families that are meant to be mixed on one page. The specimen shows thin strokes throughout: stems are only a little heavier than the hairlines that join them, the serifs are fine horizontal lines, and the letters are narrow, so many characters fit on a line. The lowercase is tall against the capitals, a trait the official notes ascribe to every family in the system, along with a slight stress that comes from handwriting. Antic Didone has one Regular style, 218 glyphs and a basic Latin character set. It is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 with the Reserved Font Name Antic Didone.

Where Antic Didone works

Magazine and newspaper headlines
Narrow letters let a long headline fit a column width, which is the job the design was made for.
Pull quotes and standfirsts
At large sizes the hairline serifs and the thin joins stay crisp and set a quote apart from the text around it.
Fashion and culture titles
Light strokes with a thick-thin rhythm give section openers and cover lines a refined, quiet tone.
Layouts built on the Antic system
Shared proportions with the other Antic families let a designer switch between serif styles while the line rhythm stays the same.

Antic Slab Slab Serif

Antic Slab is the slab-serif member of the same Antic Type System, also in one weight, so the two share proportions and differ only in serif style.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.

Things to know

Single Regular style
There is no bold and no italic. Hierarchy has to come from size, colour or a second family.
Hairlines need size
The thin strokes seen in the specimen become very fine in small text, so the face is aimed at headline sizes.
Basic Latin only
The 218 glyphs include the letters needed for English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch and the Nordic languages. The font has no extended Latin, Cyrillic or Greek sets.
