About News Cycle

News Cycle is a realist sans serif built for newspaper work: long blocks of copy first, with headlines at the top of the page as the second job. The official notes trace it to a revival of the 1908 News Gothic issued by American Type Founders. In the specimen the letters are narrow and upright, the strokes keep an even thickness, and the Regular is light enough to leave plenty of white inside the counters. The family has two static fonts, Regular and Bold, and no italic. Where the project goes beyond its source is in character coverage: the files hold 1,566 glyphs with subsets for Latin Extended, Cyrillic and Greek. Nathan Willis leads the project and holds the copyright. News Cycle was added to Google Fonts in 2011.

Where News Cycle works

News sites and blogs
The narrow letters were modelled on a newspaper face, so columns of copy stay economical without looking squeezed.
Stacked headlines
Bold at large sizes keeps a tall, tight headline shape that fits long titles on one or two lines.
Multilingual publications
Cyrillic and Greek glyphs let Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Greek editions share the look of the Latin pages.
Captions and data labels
The light, even strokes of Regular stay clear in picture captions and chart annotations.
