Candal is a sans serif display face drawn very dark and wide. Although the single style is labelled Regular 400, the specimen shows strokes as heavy as a black weight, with small counters inside a, e and g. The strokes are not uniform: they thin where curves meet stems and flare slightly toward their ends, which gives the letters a carved, somewhat calligraphic look, and the quotation marks are drawn as heavy rounded commas. The y has a curved, hooked tail and the Q a short diagonal one. Vernon Adams designed Candal, taking historical types as inspiration. The font has 350 glyphs in the Latin subset, which includes the letters for English and for languages such as French, German, Spanish, Polish, Czech and Hungarian. There is no italic and no lighter weight. The license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1, with Candal as a Reserved Font Name.
