About Special Gothic Expanded One

Special Gothic Expanded One is a sans serif of expanded width and heavy weight, published as a single font. In the specimen the letters are far wider than usual: O is a broad oval, and M and W are broader still. Strokes are thick with only a slight thinning at the joins, terminals are cut horizontally, and the apertures of a, c, e and s are nearly closed, so that words form compact dark bands. The lowercase is tall, which keeps mixed-case headlines even in height. The font is registered as Regular 400, although its colour is that of a bold. It contains 529 glyphs covering Latin and Latin Extended, with the letters needed for languages such as German, French, Polish and Turkish. Alistair McCready is the designer, and the name table lists Monolith as manufacturer. The font is licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Special Gothic Expanded One works

Two- or three-word poster headlines
Heavy, expanded letters fill the width of a sheet with very few words.
Wordmarks
Flat terminals and nearly closed apertures give a short name a solid, block-like silhouette.
Banners and title bars
The expanded width suits wide formats such as web banners, tickets and video title strips.
Section openers on websites
One large word in Special Gothic Expanded One marks a section, while a narrower text family carries the copy.
