About Biryani

Biryani is a geometric sans serif whose strokes keep nearly the same thickness throughout. Round letters are built on open, near-circular bowls, and details such as the hooked tail of the y keep the alphabet from looking mechanical; the official description calls the characters more wonky than sterile. The family has seven upright weights: ExtraLight, Light, Regular, SemiBold, Bold, ExtraBold and Black. There is no Medium and no italic. Its 850 glyphs cover Latin, Latin Extended and Devanagari, so Devanagari text and Western and Central European languages can share one design. The same description says the fonts are meant for text, though not for very long reading passages, because the shapes lean towards display. Dan Reynolds, who works in Berlin, leads the project with Mathieu Réguer, and the fonts are published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Biryani works

Headings in Devanagari and Latin
Both scripts are drawn in the same monolinear style, so a title and its translation keep one texture.
Short interface and marketing copy
The official notes place Biryani between text and display: paragraphs of a few lines, intros and captions fit that brief.
Brand systems with a wide weight range
Seven weights from ExtraLight 200 to Black 900 separate a headline, a subhead and small print without a second family.
Posters and covers
ExtraBold and Black turn the round geometric shapes into dense, dark words for large titles.

Fonts that pair with Biryani

Alegreya SC Serif

Biryani is sans serif and Alegreya SC is serif (5 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Arvo Slab Serif

Biryani is sans serif and Arvo is slab serif (2 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Azeret Mono Monospace

Azeret Mono is a monospace family (9 weights) for code and figures next to Biryani as the text face.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.

Seven static files
Biryani is not a variable font. Each weight is a separate TTF file.
