About Birthstone

Birthstone is a script typeface written with a brush-like stroke: thick, slightly tapered downstrokes, thin connecting upstrokes and a steady forward slant. In the specimen the lowercase joins from letter to letter, with looped ascenders on letters such as h, k and l and long descenders on f, g, j and y, while the capitals are plain and narrow for a script. What sets the font apart is its size. One file holds 1,753 glyphs, because it contains alternate designs grouped as Script, Casual and Formal variants plus a Titling group, all drawn so that they can be mixed within the same block of text. A sibling family, Birthstone Bounce, offers swashed capitals and endings. Robert Leuschke is the designer. Birthstone has one Regular style and covers Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese. The license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Birthstone works

Names on invitations
The joined lowercase and restrained capitals keep a couple's names readable at heading size.
Logos and product labels
Switching between the Script, Casual and Formal variants gives several versions of a name from one font.
Headings that mix styles
The stylistic sets were designed to be interchanged inside a single line, so one word can be stressed with a different set.
Greeting cards and quotes
The brush stroke and forward slant give a short phrase the look of sign-painter's lettering.

Use Birthstone on the web

Download the family and host the files on your own site, then declare them in CSS. Please do not link to the files on trendhub.net: preview files here are subsets and their addresses change.

CSS, self-hosted
@font-face {
  font-family: "Birthstone";
  src: url("/assets/fonts/Birthstone-Regular.ttf") format("truetype");
  font-weight: 400;
  font-style: normal;
  font-display: swap;
}

body {
  font-family: "Birthstone", cursive;
}

Or load it from the official source. Google Fonts serves Birthstone with this markup:

Things to know

One weight
Birthstone has Regular 400 only. A Medium exists in the sibling family Birthstone Bounce, not here.
Variants need OpenType support
The Casual, Formal and Titling forms are stylistic sets, so they are reached through the OpenType features of your software or CSS.
A large file for a script
With 1,753 glyphs the font is bigger than most single-style scripts, which matters for web loading.
