Onyx

Open-source enterprise search and AI chat that connects company tools and answers with permission-aware context.

Onyx is an open-source enterprise search and AI assistant platform. Onyx connects to workplace tools such as Slack, Google Drive, Confluence and GitHub, indexes their content with each source's permissions, and answers questions in a chat interface or supplies that context to AI agents through MCP and developer APIs.

Best for Organisations that want an internal AI assistant grounded in company documents, particularly those needing self-hosting or strict control of data.

What is Onyx?

Onyx is an open-source platform for enterprise search and AI chat. It links to more than 40 workplace applications through connectors, keeps their content synced and indexed, and enforces each source's access rules when a query runs. Staff ask questions in a chat and search interface and receive answers with cited passages; AI agents obtain the same context through an MCP server or APIs. The product searches indexed sources in parallel, an approach the company says saves time and tokens compared with querying each app live. Any major language model can be used and swapped, including open-weight models on a customer's own hardware. Onyx can run in the customer's cloud, on bare metal or fully air-gapped. Custom agents, actions, web search, deep research, a code interpreter and image generation are included, with a Slack bot, desktop app and Chrome extension.
