Elastic Stack

Suite built around Elasticsearch for search, observability and security, with vector search and AI agent tooling.

Elastic Stack is a suite of products from Elastic built around Elasticsearch, a distributed search and analytics engine. Elastic Stack is used to search application data, monitor logs, metrics and traces, detect security threats and supply context to AI applications, and it runs serverless, hosted in the cloud or self-managed.

Best for Engineering, operations and security teams that need one data store for search, log analytics, monitoring and threat detection.

What is Elastic Stack?

Elastic Stack is the collective name for the products built by Elastic, centred on Elasticsearch, a distributed search and analytics engine based on Apache Lucene. The classic components are Kibana for visualisation and management, Logstash for server-side ingestion, Beats as lightweight shippers and Elastic Agent for collecting logs, metrics and security data. Elasticsearch stores documents, vectors, logs, metrics, traces and geospatial data, and queries them through an HTTP interface using full-text, vector or hybrid search. On top of the engine Elastic sells three solutions: Search, Observability and Security. Newer additions include Agent Builder, Workflows, a piped query language and Jina AI models for embeddings and reranking. Everything can run on Elastic Cloud Serverless, on Elastic Cloud Hosted or on infrastructure you manage yourself, and a free cloud trial is offered.

Key Features

Elasticsearch

Stores and queries structured and unstructured data with full-text, vector and hybrid search.

Kibana

Builds dashboards and visual explorations of the data held in Elasticsearch.

Observability

Centralises logs, metrics and traces, with application performance, infrastructure and LLM monitoring.

Security

Provides SIEM, endpoint protection and automated alert triage on the same data store.

Agent Builder and Workflows

Lets teams build agents that draw on their own data and combine scripted automation with AI reasoning.

AutoOps

Gives cluster management help in the form of performance recommendations, resource usage and cost insights.

Use Cases

Site and Product Search
Power the search box of an online shop or application.
Grounding AI Applications
Retrieve relevant passages for a language model through vector and hybrid search.
Log Analytics
Collect logs centrally and investigate incidents from one place.
Threat Detection
Run SIEM detections and endpoint protection over security data.
Application Performance Monitoring
Track the speed and availability of services alongside infrastructure metrics.

Things to know

Three ways to run it
Elastic Cloud Serverless removes operations work, Elastic Cloud Hosted gives more control on a chosen cloud, and self-managed means running the software yourself.
Elastic versus Elastic Stack
Elastic is the company name; Elastic Stack refers to its products as a group, with Elasticsearch at the centre.
Trial without a card
The site states that the free trial does not require credit card details.

FAQs

What is the Elastic Stack?

The Elastic Stack is a suite of products from Elastic that includes Elasticsearch, Kibana, Logstash, Beats and Elastic Agent, used together for search, analytics, observability and security.

What is Elastic Stack used for?

Elastic Stack is used to search application data, analyse logs and metrics, monitor systems, detect security threats and provide retrieval for AI applications.

How do Elastic and Elasticsearch differ?

Elastic is the company, and Elasticsearch is the search and analytics engine it builds. Elastic Stack is the name for the wider group of Elastic products.

Is Elastic Stack free?

Elastic's site says Elasticsearch can be downloaded to get started at no cost, and Elastic Cloud has a free trial that needs no credit card. Costs for cloud plans are on the official pricing page.

Where can Elastic Stack be deployed?

Elastic Stack products run in three ways: as a serverless Elastic Cloud service, as a hosted Elastic Cloud deployment, or on infrastructure you manage yourself, including locally and on Kubernetes. Elastic is also sold through the AWS, Azure and Google Cloud marketplaces.

Does Elastic Stack support vector search?

Yes. Elasticsearch in the Elastic Stack supports vector search over embeddings, semantic search, hybrid search and reranking, and it can back retrieval augmented generation pipelines.

Does Elastic Stack have an API?

Yes. Elasticsearch, the core of the Elastic Stack, is accessed through a RESTful HTTP API.
