About Shrikhand

Shrikhand is a display typeface with very heavy, forward-leaning letters and compact serifs, drawn for both Gujarati and Latin. In the specimen the Latin letters are wide and thick with small counters, rounded joins and curling ends on a, f and y. The official notes say the name belongs to a sweet, creamy dessert from Gujarat that the designer is fond of, and that the design distils three years of looking at hand-painted lettering in the streets there while Jonny Pinhorn lived in Ahmedabad; work on the font started in June 2015. There is one style only, and it is slanted: the file is listed as Regular and no upright companion exists. Its 829 glyphs cover the Gujarati script along with Latin and Latin Extended. Shrikhand is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Shrikhand works

Posters and event titles
Thick slanted letters with tiny counters turn two or three words into a single dark shape.
Food packaging and menus
The design is named after a dessert and carries the look of painted shop lettering onto labels and menu headings.
Gujarati and Latin shopfronts
Both scripts are drawn in the same heavy, curving manner, so a bilingual sign keeps one voice.
Logos
The curling terminals give a short name a distinct silhouette at large sizes.

Things to know

One slanted style
Shrikhand has no upright, light or bold companion. Its only style leans forward.
Listed as Regular
The font file is named Regular at weight 400 although its letters slant, so applications list it under Regular, not Italic.
Small counters
The openings inside letters are narrow, which closes up quickly at small sizes.
