About Alegreya SC

Alegreya SC is a serif family in which small capitals take the place of lowercase letters. It belongs to the Alegreya type system, which the official notes say was first meant for literature, with a varied rhythm that refers to calligraphy without imitating it. The specimen shows that origin: stems lean and swell slightly, serifs are wedge-shaped and asymmetric, the figures are old-style, and the ampersand is drawn as a flowing et. Typing lowercase produces small caps whose weight matches the full capitals beside them. Ten static files are included: Regular, Medium, Bold, ExtraBold and Black, each with an italic; the notes call the Black weights experimental for the genre. The 1,491 glyphs cover Latin, Latin Extended, Vietnamese, Cyrillic and Greek. Juan Pablo del Peral is the designer, and Huerta Tipográfica the foundry.

Where Alegreya SC works

Chapter openings and running heads
Small caps mark the first words of a chapter or the header of a page without the loudness of full capitals.
Names, bylines and title pages
A name typed with an initial capital sets as a capital followed by small caps.
Acronyms inside Alegreya text
Abbreviations set in Alegreya SC sit at the height of the lowercase in a paragraph of the main family.
Book covers and posters
ExtraBold and Black turn the wedge serifs into strong display shapes.
Headings in Cyrillic and Greek
Both scripts are included, so translated editions can keep the same small-cap headings.

Fonts that pair with Alegreya SC

Alegreya Serif

Alegreya is the main family that Alegreya SC complements; it supplies the lowercase text beneath small-cap headings.

Alegreya Sans Sans Serif

Alegreya Sans belongs to the same type system, so its sans serif text matches the proportions of Alegreya SC headings.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.
