About Ruslan Display

Ruslan Display is a display typeface of broad, heavy capitals cut with wedge-shaped strokes. Its source, according to the official notes, is a typeface made in the 1970s by Oleg Snarsky, a designer from Ukraine, and it recalls the ustav and semi-ustav book hands of the eleventh to sixteenth centuries; the lettering appears on the signs of the Teremky metro station in Kyiv and in a 1979 book of Snarsky's alphabets. In 2011 the Russian designer Denis Masharov digitised it together with Vladimir Rabdu and drew a Latin to accompany the Cyrillic. The specimen shows letters that are wider than they are tall, with sharp thick-to-thin transitions, an A whose left leg sweeps in as a curve, and a Y that drops a long tail below the line. Lowercase keys give the same capital shapes. The single Regular style has 454 glyphs.

Where Ruslan Display works

Posters with a Slavic historical theme
The forms recall ustav manuscript writing, which suits folk festivals, exhibitions and history events.
Cyrillic signage and titles
The design originated in Cyrillic lettering used on metro station signs, and Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian letters are included.
Book covers and game titles
Wide wedge-cut capitals fill a cover line and give fairy-tale or epic subjects a period flavour.
Short wordmarks
A name of a few letters gains a strong silhouette from the sweeping A and long-tailed Y.
