About Righteous

Righteous is a display typeface with heavy, even strokes built on a grid. In the specimen the capital A has a round arch in place of a point, M and W are drawn as joined arches, the lowercase e has a slanted crossbar, and bowls are near-circles joined to straight stems. The official notes trace the idea to the all-capitals lettering on deco posters that the Hungarian artist Robert Berény made for Modiano; unlike that source, Righteous comes with a complete lowercase. The font has one Regular style, no italic, and is not a variable font. Its 372 glyphs are organised in the Latin and Latin Extended subsets. Righteous is credited to Astigmatic, and the copyright notice names Brian J. Bonislawsky. It is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Righteous works

Logos and wordmarks
The arched A, M and W make a short name distinctive when set in capitals.
Deco-style posters
The grid-based capitals come from deco poster lettering, so they suit event posters in that manner.
Music and podcast covers
Heavy even strokes keep a short title solid against a photo or a flat colour.
Headings in sentence case
The added lowercase lets subheads and buttons use mixed case, which the poster source could not offer.
