About Geo

Geo is a display typeface in which nearly every curve is replaced by a straight stroke and a right angle. In the specimen the o is a rectangle, capitals and lowercase are narrow and of one stroke thickness, and diagonals appear only where a letter cannot do without them, as in K, X and Z. The official notes place Geo among the descendants of experimental alphabets that modernists such as Herbert Bayer drew in the 1920s, and they add a wry remark about the consumerist use of that look in the 1980s and 1990s. Ben Weiner is the designer. The family has one weight in two styles, Regular and Italic, and is not a variable font. Its 207 glyphs cover the basic Latin character set, including the letters needed for English, French, German and Spanish. Geo is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Geo works

Logos and wordmarks
Letters reduced to rectangles and straight strokes give a short name a constructed, emblem-like shape.
Poster and flyer titles
Narrow box-shaped letters fit a long title on one line and echo the 1920s modernist work the design refers to.
Titles in grid-based layouts
Right-angled outlines line up with rules, boxes and columns, so headings and frames share the same geometry.
Short labels and numerals
The figures are squared off like the letters, which suits scoreboards, counters and numbered sections.
