About Chivo

Chivo is a grotesque sans serif family and, according to its publisher, the first grotesque from Omnibus-Type; the name is Spanish for goat. In the specimen the letters are wide and upright with nearly uniform strokes, the c, e and s close on flat horizontal terminals, the a is double-storey and the Q's tail crosses its bowl. The official notes single out Black for highlights and headlines and Regular for continuous reading. In October 2022 the family was rebuilt as a variable font spanning Thin to Black with italics to match, and its glyph set grew to serve more languages. The weight axis runs from 100 to 900 with nine named weights in roman and italic, 18 styles across two variable files. The fonts contain 811 glyphs with Latin, extended Latin and Vietnamese subsets. Héctor Gatti developed the family, which is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Chivo works

Front-page style headlines
Black 900 is the weight the publisher points to for highlights, and its wide letters fill a column.
Article text
Regular with its italic handles continuous reading, with Medium and SemiBold for subheads.
Interface type scales
A 100 to 900 axis lets a design system choose intermediate weights for labels, values and states.
Vietnamese editions
The Vietnamese subset carries the stacked diacritics that language needs, in every weight and italic.
Brand systems on one family
Eighteen styles cover display, text and small print without a second typeface.
