About Familjen Grotesk

Familjen Grotesk is a sans serif in the grotesque tradition, with a large lowercase, fairly closed apertures and sturdy capitals. What sets it apart are the notches, or ink traps, cut where strokes meet: at headline sizes they show as a deliberate detail, and at small sizes they keep the joins from clogging. The specimen also shows a single-storey a and a j with a broad curved tail. The family is a variable font with a weight axis from 400 to 700, in an upright and an italic file, and names four weights in each: Regular, Medium, SemiBold and Bold, eight styles. It contains 696 glyphs across Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese. The catalogue credits Familjen STHLM AB; the name table lists Anders Wikstroem, Jonas Baeckman, Matilda Gysing and Kristian Moeller as designers.

Where Familjen Grotesk works

Brand identities
Ink-trap notches and a single-storey a give a wordmark recognisable details, and the same family then sets the supporting text.
Large editorial headlines
At display sizes the notches at the joins become visible features of the letters.
Body text on websites
A large lowercase and the Regular and Medium weights, each with an italic, cover paragraphs, emphasis and captions.
Interface text at small sizes
The traps keep junctions open where strokes would otherwise fill in on low-resolution screens.
