About La Belle Aurore

La Belle Aurore is a handwriting typeface drawn by Kimberly Geswein. The official description calls it whimsical and romantic and points out that it is not a true script, though its curls and tendrils resemble one. In the specimen the line is thin and even, like a fine pen, and everything leans strongly to the right. Some lowercase letters touch their neighbours and others stand apart, widths vary from letter to letter, and g, j and y end in long looped descenders. Capitals such as A, D, G and J are written in cursive forms with entry loops, and the x-height is small against the tall ascenders. La Belle Aurore is one static Regular file with 354 glyphs in Latin and Latin Extended character sets, including the letters for French, German, Polish, Czech and Hungarian. There is no bold or italic.

Where La Belle Aurore works

Handwritten notes and quotes
The uneven widths and partial joins read as a real person's pen writing in a short quotation.
Greeting cards and invitations
Looped descenders and cursive capitals give names and greetings a personal touch.
Journals and scrapbook layouts
The thin pen line works as captions and margin notes beside photographs.
Social media graphics
A line of slanted handwriting over an image adds an informal signature-like element.

Things to know

One style
La Belle Aurore has Regular 400 only, with no bold, italic or variable version.
Small lowercase
The x-height is low compared with the ascenders, so the face needs a larger size than a text font to read comfortably.
Handwriting, not a connected script
Letters join only in places; the official description itself says it is not a true script.
