About Akshar

Akshar is a sans serif family with tall, narrow letters, made for display text in Latin and Devanagari. In the specimen the capitals are compressed, the curves of O and C have straight sides, and stroke thickness is nearly uniform at the default setting. The family is an OpenType variable font with two axes. Weight runs from 300 to 700, with the named instances Light, Regular, Medium, SemiBold and Bold. Contrast, a custom axis with the tag CTRS, runs from 0 to 100. There is no italic. The official description lists headlines, titles, announcements, statements, intros and outros as intended uses, and explains that the name is the word for a letter of the alphabet in Hindi and several other Indic languages. The 835 glyphs cover Devanagari, Latin and Latin Extended. Akshar is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Akshar works

Video intros and outros
Tall, narrow capitals fit a full title on one line of a 16:9 frame, a use the official description names.
Devanagari and Latin headlines
Both scripts are drawn in the same condensed proportions, so a two-script headline keeps one width and rhythm.
Event announcements
Narrow letters leave room for a long date, place and name on a single poster line.
Animated type
Weight and contrast can both be animated, since each is a continuous axis.
Social media statements
Bold 700 sets a short statement large inside a square or vertical frame.
