About Kaushan Script

Kaushan Script is a script typeface that imitates fast lettering with a brush. The strokes swell and taper, the letters lean forward, and many lowercase letters reach towards the next one through short exit strokes. Pablo Impallari chose not to polish the outlines: stem angles differ a little from letter to letter and the letters shift up and down along the baseline, which gives a line a rustic, hand-made rhythm. Ascenders and descenders are shorter than in many scripts, so the face keeps its size on screens; its maker states that it remains readable on the web down to 16 px. The family has one Regular style with 402 glyphs covering Latin and Latin Extended. The project was funded through Kickstarter, and the name was proposed by one of its backers, Vyacheslav Kaushan. It was added to Google Fonts in 2012.

Where Kaushan Script works

Logos for food and craft brands
Brush strokes with uneven angles give a single word the look of hand-painted lettering.
Packaging and labels
A product name in the heavy, slanted script stands out against small print set in a plain face.
Web headings
Short ascenders and descenders let headings stay large in their line, and the face was tuned to read at sizes from 16 px.
Social media graphics
The bouncing baseline keeps a short slogan lively over a photo or flat colour.
T-shirts and posters
A two- or three-word phrase set big shows the swelling and tapering of the brush.
