About Fustat

Fustat is a low-contrast sans serif family for the Arabic and Latin scripts. Mohamed Gaber designed the Arabic and Khaled Hosny engineered it; the letterforms take the Kufi hand of old manuscripts as their starting point and redraw it for present-day use. Laura Garcia Mut designed the Latin to sit beside it; in the specimen it has a tall lowercase, a double-storey a, a single-storey g and strokes of nearly even thickness. Fustat is a variable font with one axis, weight, running from ExtraLight 200 to ExtraBold 800 in seven named steps, without italics. According to the official notes, the 1,002 glyphs include tabular and proportional figures, fractions, superscripts, subscripts and stylistic sets with alternate forms. The name table lists Kief Type Foundry, Alif Type Foundry and Hard Type Foundry, and the license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Fustat works

Arabic and English websites
Both scripts were designed as one family, so a bilingual page keeps the same stroke weight and texture in each language.
Arabic headlines
The Kufi-derived Arabic gives titles a geometric, manuscript-rooted character, and ExtraBold 800 adds weight for large sizes.
Brand identities for Arabic-speaking markets
Seven weights from 200 to 800 cover a wordmark, subheads and small print within a single family.
Tables and price lists
Tabular figures are listed among the OpenType features, which keeps columns of numbers aligned.
Interface text
The tall Latin lowercase and even stroke keep short labels readable at small sizes.
