About Cutive

Cutive is a slab serif typeface that Vernon Adams based on a number of classic typewriter faces. It keeps the typewriter vocabulary: strokes of nearly one thickness, flat slab serifs with rounded ends, ball-shaped terminals on a, c, f, j and r, and a wide, round lowercase. Unlike a real typewriter face, the letters are proportionally spaced, so i and l take less room than m and w; the fixed-width version is published separately as the sister family Cutive Mono. The designer's notes say the faces were revived as web fonts both to add character to body text and for larger header and display sizes. The specimen shows a generous x-height, an open two-storey g and a slanted percent sign. Cutive is one Regular style of 439 glyphs, covering Latin and Latin Extended, and is not a variable font.

Where Cutive works

Typewritten-looking text
Slab serifs and ball terminals suggest a typed page while proportional spacing keeps paragraphs compact.
Blog and essay headings
Set large, the round letters and heavy serifs give a title a literary, manuscript feel.
Letters, memos and props
A typed-document look for film props, invitations or stationery without the gaps of monospaced type.
Paired with Cutive Mono
The proportional Cutive can set the prose while its monospaced sister family handles code or tabular lines.
Central European copy
Latin Extended coverage includes the letters for Polish, Czech, Hungarian and Turkish.
