About Crete Round

Crete Round is a slab serif family with a soft edge. The serifs are thick slabs, but several are rounded on one side or curve into the stem, and letters such as a, k and y show angled, slightly flared strokes in the specimen. The lowercase is tall, stroke contrast is low, and the numerals are old-style figures that dip below the baseline. According to the official notes, the design began as an adaptation of the original Crete fonts, made as the corporate typeface of the Letter2 type design competition, and then had its terminals and serifs reworked into two fonts that stand apart from the original. Those two fonts are Regular and Italic, both weight 400. TypeTogether holds the copyright, and the name table lists Veronika Burian as designer. The 398 glyphs cover Latin and extended Latin, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Crete Round works

Blog and news headings
Sturdy slabs and a tall lowercase give a headline weight on screen without a separate bold.
Subheads and intro paragraphs
Low contrast keeps strokes from thinning out at the sizes used for a standfirst.
Pull quotes
The Italic sets a quotation apart while keeping the slab construction.
Wordmarks for small brands
Rounded slab serifs soften a name that a square slab would make severe.
