About Chango

Chango is a display typeface with extremely thick strokes and wide, squat proportions. Counters are reduced to small slots and dots, corners are rounded, and the outlines bulge slightly, which gives the letters a soft, cartoon-like body. The lowercase is nearly as tall as the capitals, so words form a solid dark strip. The official description traces the design to lettering by Ernesto García Cabral, a Mexican illustrator nicknamed Chango, and presents the face as large, weighty and funny, meant for headline sizes. Credits vary by source: the listing names Fontstage, which also holds the copyright, while the font's name table gives Manuel Lupez as designer. Chango has one style, labelled Regular 400 despite its mass, and is not a variable font. Its 270 glyphs cover basic Latin and Western European accents. The license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Chango works

Comic and cartoon titles
Bulging, rounded letters derived from an illustrator's lettering match drawn artwork.
Toy and snack packaging
Fat forms with tiny counters read as friendly and loud on a small pack front.
Humorous posters
The official description points to headlines with a comic touch, such as a comedy night or a school fair.
Big numbers
Numerals are as heavy as the letters, so a price, a score or a countdown dominates the layout.
