About Cabin Sketch

Cabin Sketch is a display typeface that redraws the Cabin humanist sans as if with a ballpoint pen. Every letter is traced with a doubled, wobbly outline and filled with diagonal hatching, so the background shows through the strokes; the official notes liken the texture to a teenager's doodle. Under the scribble the proportions of the parent sans remain: round bowls, a double-storey a and open, upright capitals. Two styles are provided, Regular 400 and Bold 700; in the Bold the hatching is denser, so letters look darker but hardly wider. There is no italic. Each font holds 224 glyphs in the Latin character set, which covers Western European languages but not Latin Extended. Because the outlines are so detailed, the files are large for their glyph count. The font's name table credits Pablo Impallari, and the license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Cabin Sketch works

School and classroom themes
Hatched, pen-drawn letters look like notebook doodles on timetables, club posters and yearbook pages.
Craft and DIY headings
The sketch texture signals something made by hand above instructions set in a plain family.
Presentation title slides
Bold 700 holds a slide title, with Regular 400 for a subtitle in the same sketched style.
Party invitations
A name or date in outlined letters reads as drawn with a pen instead of typeset.

Fonts that pair with Cabin Sketch

Cabin Sans Serif

Cabin is the clean humanist sans that Cabin Sketch is drawn over, so text in Cabin matches the proportions of the sketched headings.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.

Things to know

Basic Latin only
The 224 glyphs do not include Latin Extended, so Turkish, Polish and Czech letters are not complete.
Texture needs size
The hatching is fine detail inside each stroke and is only visible when the text is set large.
Heavy files
The Bold file is about 269 KB for 224 glyphs, a consequence of the detailed outlines.
