About Carter One

Carter One is a heavy casual display typeface by Vernon Adams. The official description explains that it revisits informal type styles of the mid 20th century, the kind seen in advertisements and on pulp paperbacks, and that the letters were redrawn for web use with more open counters and stems tuned for display sizes. In the specimen every letter leans forward, strokes flare toward their ends and are cut at an angle as if made with a broad brush or marker, a is single-storey and the figures lean with the letters. Carter One is one static Regular file with 269 glyphs in a Latin character set, including the letters for English, French, German, Spanish, Turkish and the Nordic languages. There is no upright, lighter or variable version. The license notice reserves the names Carter and Carter One.

Where Carter One works

Retro advertising headlines
The design comes from mid-century ad lettering, which suits sale banners, diner menus and vintage-style promotions.
Book and comic covers
Pulp fiction covers are among its sources, and the heavy slanted letters carry a title over artwork.
Playful packaging
Flared, brush-like strokes give snack, toy and drink labels an informal voice.
Social media titles
The opened-up counters keep a short caption readable when the image is shown small.
