About Asul

Asul is a typeface that sits between serif and sans: its designer describes it as a baroque humanist face with semi-serifs. In the specimen the stems widen toward their ends into small flares and one-sided serifs, the contrast between thick and thin is moderate, and the curves carry an angled, pen-like stress. Capitals are generous in width, and the lowercase a and g are two-storey forms. Mariela Monsalve developed Asul as a revival for editorial use, working from a typeface she found in Argentinian books and magazines printed in the early twentieth century. The family has Regular 400 and Bold 700 without italics, two styles, and is not a variable font. Its 234 glyphs cover the basic Latin subset. Asul is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Asul works

Magazine headings
It was developed for editorial use, and flared stroke ends give titles more texture than a plain sans.
Book covers
Its source in early twentieth-century Argentinian print suits covers for literary and historical titles.
Introductions and short texts
Moderate contrast and two-storey a and g keep a paragraph of standfirst readable.
Cultural posters and programmes
Regular for details and Bold for the title give a two-level layout from one family.
