Zep
Context and memory layer for AI agents that builds governed knowledge graphs from business data, documents and conversations.
Zep is a context and memory platform for AI agents. Zep ingests business data, documents and conversations, organises them into Context Graphs keyed to individual users, accounts or domains, and returns only the facts a task needs. Developers send data to Zep through its API, then retrieve policy-filtered context in a single call when an agent runs.
Best for Engineering teams building production AI agents that need shared, access-controlled memory drawn from many business systems.

What is Zep?
Zep is infrastructure that supplies AI agents with context. It takes in three kinds of input, namely business data, documents and conversations, and organises them into temporal Context Graphs, one per user, customer, account or business domain. Facts in a graph carry dates, are updated as the underlying data changes and stay linked to the source they came from. When an agent needs information, Zep returns the relevant facts in one call instead of whole records, which the company says reduces token use. Access and retention policies are enforced in the data layer, and requests are logged for audit. The collection of graphs is called the Context Lake and runs on Konig, Zep's graph database service. Zep is available as a managed cloud, a cloud with customer-held encryption keys, or a deployment inside the customer's VPC.
Key Features
Context Graphs
Builds a separate temporal graph of entities and dated facts for each user, account or domain.
Single-call retrieval
Returns the facts a task depends on, filtered by policy, in one request.
Source tracing
Links every fact to the message or document it was extracted from so answers can be audited.
Access and retention policies
Applies attribute-based access control and scheduled data expiry, with legal hold when required.
Memory MCP Server
Gives agents such as Claude and ChatGPT a shared per-user memory governed by policy.
Analytics and logs
Reports ingestion, retrieval, latency and errors across projects and keeps API and audit logs.
How Zep works
Ingest
Send records from your business systems, files and chats to Zep, which remembers where every item originated.
Build
Zep constructs a Context Graph for every user, account or domain and updates facts as data changes.
Retrieve
Ask for the context a task needs and receive policy-filtered facts in one call.

Use Cases
- Agent memory
- Let an assistant recall past conversations, user activity and changing preferences.
- Customer and account context
- Combine account records, conversations and events so support agents know the situation.
- Enterprise knowledge graphs
- Share knowledge about customers, projects and domains across many agents.
- Regulated deployments
- Run Zep in your own VPC or with your own encryption keys.
- Prototyping an agent
- Start on the free tier to test memory and retrieval before scaling.
Things to know
- Billing is per Episode
- An Episode is any single data object sent to Zep, such as a chat message or JSON payload, and its credit cost grows with its size.
- Free tier limits
- The free tier has variable rate limits, lower-priority processing, and no rollover or automatic top-up.
- Automatic top-up on paid plans
- Flex and Flex Plus add a block of credits automatically when the balance falls under 20 percent.
- Currency not stated
- The pricing page shows dollar amounts without naming the currency, so no prices are listed here.
