Kiro

Agentic AI development tool from AWS that turns prompts into specs and implements them with parallel coding agents.

Kiro is an agentic AI development tool built and operated by AWS. Kiro is used to turn a prompt into requirements, a design and a task list, then implement the tasks with parallel agents and check the result with property-based tests. Kiro runs as an IDE, a command-line tool, a web app, a mobile app and Kiro Crew.

Best for Developers and teams who want AI coding agents that work from written specifications and verified requirements, especially on large codebases.

What is Kiro?

Kiro is an AI coding agent and development environment centred on spec-driven development. Instead of generating code straight from a chat message, it first writes requirements, an architectural design and sequenced tasks, checks the requirements for contradictions and gaps, and only then implements the work, running agents in parallel either locally or in the cloud. Behaviour is tested with property-based tests that assert rules across all inputs. The agent is available in an IDE based on Code OSS, which imports VS Code settings and Open VSX extensions, as well as in a CLI that can run headless in CI/CD, a browser interface, a mobile app and the Kiro Crew workspace. Users pick a model from Anthropic, OpenAI or open-weight families, or leave the choice to Auto. Plans are credit based, with a free tier, and enterprise controls such as SSO are offered.

Key Features

Spec-Driven Workflow

Converts a prompt into requirements, a design document and an ordered task list before any code is written.

Requirement Checking

Examines requirements for contradictions and missing cases using automated reasoning techniques.

Property-Based Tests

Generates tests that assert rules which must hold for every input, similar to fuzz testing.

Parallel Agents

Implements tasks with several agents at once, on your own machine or in isolated cloud sessions.

Model Choice

Lets you select Claude, GPT or open-weight models per task, or use Auto to balance quality, latency and cost.

Open Standards Support

Works with the Agent Client Protocol, AGENTS.md, skills files and MCP servers for bringing in outside tools and context.

Use Cases

Feature Development
Write a short description of a feature and let the agent plan and implement it against a spec.
Bug Fixing
Use a bugfix spec to capture the faulty behaviour and the conditions a fix must satisfy.
Pull Request Review in CI
Run the headless CLI in a pipeline to review changes and repair failures without an editor.
Large Codebase Changes
Split a cross-cutting change into tasks handled by parallel agents.
Infrastructure Code
Draft and adjust Terraform modules or container setups with agent help.

Things to know

Usage is counted in credits
Every prompt, spec refinement, task run and hook execution consumes credits, and models draw credits at different rates.
One subscription per developer
Subscriptions cannot be shared; each team member needs their own.
Third-party harnesses are not allowed
Routing requests through outside automation harnesses rather than Kiro's own interfaces is not permitted under the subscription.
Model availability varies
Not every premium model is offered in all countries or regions.
