About Vast Shadow

Vast Shadow is a wide slab serif display face with a built-in shadow. Each letter in the specimen is a heavy, extended form standing on thick rectangular serifs, trailed down and to the right by a thin outline that reads as a cast shadow. The lowercase a is single-storey, and the figures are as broad as the capitals. The official notes place the design among Victorian advertising types and warn that the fine shadow line does not hold up at small sizes, recommending 32px or more. There is one Regular 400 file, no italic and no variable axis. The 231 glyphs cover the basic Latin set: English, German, Spanish, Italian and the Nordic languages are complete, and French lacks only the rare capital Ÿ. Nicole Fally is the designer; the license notice names Sorkin Type Co, and the license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Vast Shadow works

Victorian-style posters
Extended slab letters with a shadow reproduce the look of nineteenth-century advertising in a title of two or three words.
Shop signs and window lettering
The cast-shadow outline gives flat lettering a raised, sign-painted appearance on fascias and A-boards.
Label and menu titles
A product name or section heading in Vast Shadow stands apart from plain text set beneath it.
Web hero headings
At 32px and above, the size the official notes recommend, the shadow line stays crisp on screen.
