About UnifrakturMaguntia

UnifrakturMaguntia is a blackletter typeface in the Fraktur style: broken, angular lowercase strokes with diamond-shaped feet, and broad capitals built from curling, doubled strokes. According to the official description, j. 'mach' wust started from a font by Peter Wiegel, itself derived from a typeface that Carl Albert Fahrenwaldt made in 1901, and left the glyph shapes almost untouched. What changed is the technology: ligatures are handled through OpenType, Apple Advanced Typography and SIL Graphite. As an experimental feature, the font separates required ligatures such as ch, ck and tz, which stay joined when text is letterspaced, from ordinary ones such as fi and fl, which split apart. The character set includes the long s and a capital sharp s. There is one Regular style with 270 glyphs for basic Latin and Western European accents, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where UnifrakturMaguntia works

Newspaper-style mastheads
Broad Fraktur capitals and dense lowercase give a publication name the look of an old masthead.
German historical texts
The long s and the required ligatures follow the conventions of Fraktur typesetting, which matters when quoting old German print.
Certificates and diplomas
A title line in blackletter above plain text signals ceremony and tradition.
Labels and logos with a traditional tone
Breweries, bakeries and bands use Fraktur forms for a name that should look centuries old.
Letterspaced blackletter titles
Required ligatures stay intact while other pairs open up, so tracked-out titles keep correct joins.
