About Ultra

Ultra is a slab serif display typeface drawn at an extremely heavy weight. The official description links it to wood type styles and positions it for titling. In the specimen the strokes are so thick that the counters of a, e and o shrink to small openings. Block-like serifs join the stems through curved brackets, round ball terminals finish a, c, f, j and r, and the letters are wide. The figures match the letters in weight. Ultra is a single static Regular file with 374 glyphs in Latin and Latin Extended character sets, including the letters for Turkish, Polish, Czech and Hungarian. There is no lighter weight, italic or variable version. The record credits Astigmatic, and the copyright notice names Brian J. Bonislawsky, doing business as Astigmatic. Ultra is licensed under Apache 2.0, not the Open Font License.

Where Ultra works

Poster and flyer headlines
The very thick strokes and wide letters let two or three words carry a whole poster.
Wood-type flavoured titles
Bracketed slabs and ball terminals recall wood type on show bills, menus and labels.
Large numerals
The figures are as heavy as the letters, which suits prices, dates and scores set big.
Section titles above plain text
A short heading in Ultra contrasts strongly with a light text family underneath.

Download the family and host the files on your own site, then declare them in CSS. Please do not link to the files on trendhub.net: preview files here are subsets and their addresses change.

Things to know

One weight
Ultra has Regular 400 only, and that single style is already extremely heavy. There is no italic.
Apache 2.0 license
Ultra is not under the Open Font License. Copies carry the Apache license text and the copyright and attribution notices.
Small counters
In the specimen the enclosed spaces of a and e are very small, so the letters fill in when set small.
