About Spectral SC

Spectral SC is a small-caps serif family, the companion to Spectral, a design that the official notes describe as intended first for screens, text-heavy layouts and long-form reading. The specimen shows a bookish face with sharp, thin serifs, visible contrast between stems and hairlines, and compact, calm proportions. Seven weights run from ExtraLight 200 to ExtraBold 800, and every weight has an italic, which gives 14 styles. They are separate static fonts; there is no variable version in the package. Each file holds 1,446 glyphs for Latin, Latin Extended, Cyrillic and Vietnamese. The catalogue names Production Type as designer, and the name table credits Jean-Baptiste Levee; the project was commissioned by Google Fonts. Spectral SC is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Spectral SC works

Running heads and bylines
A small-caps family gives folios, bylines and section labels a quieter texture than full capitals.
Acronyms and opening lines
Set beside Spectral, it supplies matching small capitals for abbreviations and the first words of a chapter.
Book and essay titles
ExtraLight and Light show the thin serifs at display sizes, while Bold and ExtraBold make dense, dark title lines.
Long reading on screens
The design was drawn for screen-first, text-rich pages, with Regular and Medium for the main copy.
Multilingual editions
Cyrillic and Vietnamese sets are included in all 14 fonts.

Fonts that pair with Spectral SC

Inter Sans Serif

Spectral SC is serif and Inter is sans serif (9 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Atkinson Hyperlegible Mono Monospace

Atkinson Hyperlegible Mono is a monospace family (7 weights) for code and figures next to Spectral SC as the text face.

Mukta Sans Serif

Spectral SC is serif and Mukta is sans serif (7 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.
