About Poltawski Nowy

Poltawski Nowy is a serif typeface that brings the 1928 Polish design Antykwa Półtawskiego into digital form. Its most recognisable letters are w and y, drawn with rounded bowls instead of diagonals, and a k whose arm closes into a loop. According to the project notes, the outlines were developed from a foundry specimen book, drawings, punch patterns and punches dating from 1934 to 1955, with characters standardised so the ornamental design also works in running text. The family is variable on a weight axis from 400 to 700, with Regular, Medium, SemiBold and Bold instances in upright and italic. Its 1,068 glyphs add small caps, superscripts and subscripts, tabular and proportional figures and wider diacritic coverage, including Vietnamese. The designer credits list Adam Półtawski alongside Mateusz Machalski, Borys Kosmynka and Ania Wieluńska.

Where Poltawski Nowy works

Book and essay typesetting
The project states a target range of 10 to 18 pt, and small caps and figure variants cover the needs of long-form pages.
Polish-language publishing
The design comes from a Polish original, and the letters for Polish are complete alongside other Central European alphabets.
Cultural and museum identities
The rounded w and y and looped k give exhibition titles and catalogues a recognisable historical voice.
Editorial headings
Four weights up to Bold, each with an italic, give a serif hierarchy without adding a second family.
Tables and annual reports
Tabular figures line up in columns, and superscripts and subscripts handle notes and units.
