About Playfair

Playfair is a serif typeface built as a variable font that changes in three dimensions. Its optical size axis is the widest in range, from 5 to 1200. At the small end, called Agate in the official notes, the letters are sturdy, widely spaced and almost without stroke contrast, with heavy flat serifs; this is the default setting and the one shown in the specimen. At the large end, called Needlepoint, contrast is pushed as far as practical and the thinnest strokes are a single font unit wide. A width axis from 87.5 to 112.5 and a weight axis from 300 to 900 complete the design space, with seven named weights from Light to Black in upright and italic. The fonts hold 2,318 glyphs covering Latin, Cyrillic and Vietnamese. Playfair succeeded Playfair Display in 2023 and is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Playfair works

Body text in articles and books
Low optical size values thicken the hairlines and open the spacing, which the earlier display-only family could not do.
Very large headlines and covers
Towards the 1200 end of the optical size axis the contrast becomes extreme, for type set at poster scale.
One serif across a whole publication
Captions, text, subheads and titles can each take a different optical size from the same two files.
Narrow columns and tight headlines
The width axis goes down to 87.5, saving horizontal space without changing typeface.
Editions in Latin and Cyrillic
The 2,318 glyphs include the letters for Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian as well as Vietnamese.

Public Sans Sans Serif

Playfair covers serif text and titles through its optical size axis; Public Sans adds a neutral sans from Thin to Black for captions, navigation and data.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.

Things to know

Defaults are small, wide and light
The files default to optical size 5, width 112.5 and weight 300. Without automatic optical sizing or manual settings, text renders in the low-contrast Agate form.
Optical size must be applied
Software that supports automatic optical sizing picks a value from the font size; elsewhere the opsz axis has to be set by hand, for example with font-variation-settings in CSS.
Two variable files
One file holds the upright styles and one the italics; each contains all three axes.
Width axis revised in 2023
The official notes record a June 2023 update that adjusted the width axis and made text appear narrower.

FAQs

Is Playfair free for commercial use?

Yes. Playfair is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which allows use in personal and commercial work, modification and redistribution. The font cannot be sold on its own, and modified versions stay under the same license.

Who designed Playfair?

Playfair is the work of Claus Eggers Sørensen. The copyright notice names The Playfair Project Authors.

How many weights does Playfair have?

Playfair has seven named weights, from Light 300 to Black 900, each with an italic, for 14 styles. As a variable font it also allows any weight in between.

Is Playfair a variable font?

Yes. Playfair is a variable font with three axes: optical size from 5 to 1200, width from 87.5 to 112.5 and weight from 300 to 900.

What is the difference between Playfair and Playfair Display?

Playfair Display is a large-size design with a weight axis only. Playfair, added to Google Fonts in 2023, is its successor and adds optical size and width axes, so the same family also covers body text.

Why does Playfair look low-contrast and wide by default?

Playfair defaults to optical size 5, the Agate design meant for very small type. Raise the optical size value, or let the software apply optical sizing automatically, to get the high-contrast forms.
