About Shantell Sans

Shantell Sans is a handwriting typeface that looks drawn with a round-tipped marker. Letters are unconnected, strokes keep an even thickness with rounded ends, and shapes such as the single-storey a and the open-tailed g follow printed handwriting, not cursive. The official notes say it is based on Shantell Martin's artwork and handwriting and was made for playful typography, creative expression and animation. That purpose shows in its four variable axes: weight (300 to 800), Informality (0 to 100), Bounce (-100 to 100) and Spacing (0 to 100). Six named weights with italics make 12 styles. The 1,722 glyphs cover Latin, Latin Extended, Vietnamese and Cyrillic. Shantell Martin conceived and directed the project, Arrow Type handled the type design and development, and Anya Danilova drew the Cyrillic; the name table also names Stephen Nixon.

Where Shantell Sans works

Animated titles
Bounce, Informality and Spacing are variable axes, so their values can be animated in motion graphics or with CSS.
Children's books and classroom material
Unconnected marker letters with a single-storey a resemble the printing children learn to read and write.
Comics, captions and social posts
Six weights from Light to ExtraBold let hand-lettered captions whisper or shout.
Notes and annotations in interfaces
Set at Informality 0 the letters stay regular enough for onboarding tips and sticky-note style comments.
Projects in Latin and Cyrillic
Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian are covered in the same hand as the Latin.
