About Shalimar

Shalimar is a script typeface that Robert Leuschke modelled on writing with a flat nib pen. The broad nib shows in the way strokes switch abruptly between thick and thin as the direction changes, and in the tapered, flicked ends of letters. The lowercase is very small in relation to the capitals, with long ascenders on b, d, h, k and l and deep, hooked descenders on f, g, j and y, so words look light and widely spaced vertically. Capitals are open, loosely drawn script forms; a stylistic set replaces them with more Roman shapes when the script versions are too free. The official description calls the design upright, though the specimen shows a gentle lean to the right. One Regular style holds 1,021 glyphs for Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese. Shalimar is not a variable font.

Where Shalimar works

Invitation and card text
Pen-written forms with long ascenders give a few lines of text the look of a handwritten note.
Quotations and verses
The light, airy texture suits a short poem or motto set with generous line spacing.
Names with a choice of capitals
The stylistic set of Roman-style capitals offers a plainer initial when the script capital is hard to read.
Labels for crafted goods
A product name in a broad-nib hand suggests something written by the maker.
Accented names
With 1,021 glyphs covering Latin Extended and Vietnamese, accented guest names stay in the same script.

Things to know

Small x-height
The lowercase bodies are tiny next to the ascenders, so Shalimar must be set larger than a text face to be read.
Line spacing
Long ascenders and descenders need open leading, or lines will collide.
One style
There is a single style, Regular 400, with no bold.
