About Rozha One

Rozha One is a display face built on the sharpest possible difference between thick and thin strokes. The Latin follows the fat-face modern style of nineteenth-century advertising posters: heavy vertical stems, hairline serifs and joins, ball terminals. Its lowercase is so tall, and its capitals so small, that the two nearly merge in a line, as the specimen confirms. The Devanagari was drawn to sit beside it: the headline that links the base characters has the thickness of the Latin serifs, and some strokes and vowel marks echo Latin shapes. Indian Type Foundry released the font in 2014; the official notes credit the Devanagari to Tim Donaldson and Jyotish Sonowal and the Latin to Shiva Nallaperumal. There is one style, Regular, with 1,069 glyphs including Devanagari conjuncts. The makers advise very large sizes on screen.

Where Rozha One works

Poster-size headlines
Heavy stems against hairlines are meant to be seen large, where the thin strokes stay visible.
Magazine covers and section openers
The fat-face Latin recalls nineteenth-century poster lettering and gives a title page a strong period flavour.
Devanagari and Latin titles together
The Devanagari headline matches the thickness of the Latin serifs, so bilingual headings look like one design.
Print at moderate sizes
The official notes allow smaller use in print than on screen, down to about 16 or 18 points.

Things to know

One style
Rozha One has a single Regular font. It is not a variable font, and there is no italic or lighter weight.
Hairlines need size
The thin strokes are very fine. On screens the makers recommend very large pixel sizes.
Glyph count in the notes differs
The official description gives a total of 1,095; the file measured for this page holds 1,069 glyphs.
Small capitals by proportion
Capitals are only slightly taller than the lowercase, so the usual contrast between upper and lower case is weak.
