About Abril Fatface

Abril Fatface is a heavy display serif in the Didone manner: thick vertical stems, hairline serifs and joins, and ball terminals on letters such as a, c, f, r and y. The official description traces the design to the heavy titling faces of British and French advertising posters in the nineteenth century. It is one cut of Abril, a larger family by TypeTogether that, according to the same source, counts eighteen cuts for display and text; only the Fatface is distributed here. The font has a single style at weight 400, although the letters are far darker than that number suggests, and it is not a variable font. Its 407 glyphs cover the Latin and Latin Extended subsets, including the letters for Turkish, Polish, Czech and Hungarian. Veronika Burian and José Scaglione designed it, and the license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Abril Fatface works

Magazine and blog headlines
Thick stems against hairline serifs give a title strong presence at large sizes, the job the titling weights of Abril were drawn for.
Posters and event announcements
The design looks back to nineteenth-century advertising posters, and a few large words carry a whole sheet.
Book covers and title pages
Ball terminals and fine serifs give a short title a literary, printed character.
Pull quotes and drop caps
One heavy style contrasts sharply with a lighter text face when a phrase or initial has to stand out.
Labels and packaging names
A product name set in the 407-glyph Latin Extended set can carry accents for most European markets.
