About Red Rose

Red Rose is a display typeface with broad, low-contrast letters that stretch a headline horizontally. The shapes are those of an extended sans serif, but small spurs appear on some strokes: the leg of R ends in a pointed foot, and letters such as a, d and u keep a short tail at the baseline. The official description says Jaikishan Patel designed the face for posters about love, romance, drama, thrillers, noir and passion. Red Rose is a variable font with a weight axis running from 300 to 700; the named weights are Light, Regular, Medium, SemiBold and Bold. There are no italics. The font holds 635 glyphs covering Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese. The official notes still describe an earlier release with fewer weights and a slightly different glyph total; the figures here come from the current files. The license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Red Rose works

Film and theatre posters
Poster titles for romance, drama and noir are the purpose stated by the designer.
Title cards and thumbnails
Wide letters fill a landscape frame with a short title.
Covers for romance and crime fiction
The genre brief behind the design carries over to book covers, with Bold for the title and Light for the author line.
Wide wordmarks
Extended proportions turn a short brand name into a long, low lockup.
Vietnamese headlines
Vietnamese accented letters are included, so titles in Vietnamese use the same wide forms.
