About Pinyon Script

Pinyon Script is a formal script typeface in the round hand tradition. The letters slant steeply to the right, the lowercase joins into a continuous line, and the difference between the hairline upstrokes and the swelling downstrokes is strong. Capitals are built from loops and long entry flourishes, and descenders on letters such as f, g, j and y swing far below the line. Because the thin strokes are so fine, the official notes recommend the face for larger sizes. Nicole Fally is credited as designer; the name table also names Eben Sorkin, and Sorkin Type Co. appears as manufacturer. The notes record a glyph set and language expansion in June 2022 and a further update in 2024. The single Regular font now holds 834 glyphs across the latin, latin-ext and vietnamese subsets under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Pinyon Script works

Formal invitations
Looped capitals and a steep slant suit the names and opening line of a wedding or gala invitation.
Certificates and diplomas
A recipient's name set large shows the hairline upstrokes and flourishes that mark a round hand script.
Menus and place cards
Course titles and guest names can be set in the script while a plain text face handles descriptions.
Monograms and boutique wordmarks
Two or three flourished capitals form a monogram; a short brand name works where a penned signature look is wanted.

Things to know

Hairlines need size
The thinnest strokes are very fine. At small sizes or in low-resolution print they can break up, so the face is intended for larger settings.
One style, no bold
Pinyon Script has a single Regular file and no variable axes.
Capitals lead into lowercase
The capitals carry wide flourishes that overlap their neighbours in the specimen's all-capitals line; they are drawn to start a word.
No Cyrillic or Greek
Coverage is Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese only.
