About Ovo

Ovo is a serif typeface with moderate contrast and softly rounded serifs. Its starting point, according to the official description, was a set of hand-lettered capitals found in a lettering guide from the 1930s; their soft serifs and faintly casual air were carried into a mild lowercase and playful numerals. Letter widths follow old-style proportions, so a round O or a wide M sits beside a narrow E or S. In the specimen the 3 and 5 swing below their neighbours, and the ampersand is an open, looped form. The same description recommends medium and large sizes because of the varied widths and fine detail. Ovo has one Regular style, with no italic or bold, and 261 glyphs covering basic Latin and Western European accents. Nicole Fally is the designer, Sorkin Type Co. holds the copyright, and the license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Ovo works

Magazine and blog headlines
Soft serifs and old-style widths give a headline warmth at the larger sizes the design was drawn for.
Pull quotes and introductions
A few lines at a medium size show the fine detail that gets lost in small print.
Menus and stationery
The 1930s lettering behind the capitals suits cafe menus, letterheads and place cards.
Title pages and covers
Capitals alone, with the long-tailed Q and round O, carry a book title or a chapter opener.

Fonts that pair with Ovo

Advent Pro Sans Serif

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.
