About Anonymous Pro

Anonymous Pro is a fixed-width typeface family in which every character occupies the same horizontal space. Mark Simonson designed it for programming: the zero in the specimen carries a slash, and I, l and 1 each have their own serifs and feet, so the characters most often confused in source code look different. According to the official description, the family was inspired by Anonymous 9, a freeware bitmap font for the Macintosh that Susan Lesch and David Lamkins developed in the mid-1990s. There are four static styles, Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic, and the Regular and Bold files contain embedded bitmaps for the smallest sizes, 10 to 13 pixels per em. The 624 glyphs cover Latin, Latin Extended, Cyrillic and Greek character sets. Anonymous Pro is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Anonymous Pro works

Code editors and terminals
Distinct shapes for 0 and O and for 1, l and I reduce misreadings in identifiers, hashes and file paths.
Code samples in documentation and slides
Bold and italic styles mark keywords and comments while every character stays on the same fixed grid.
Small sizes on low-resolution screens
Embedded bitmaps in Regular and Bold take over between 10 and 13 pixels per em, where outlines render least clearly.
Plain-text tables and logs
Equal character widths keep columns aligned in configuration files, logs and ASCII tables.
Comments and strings in Cyrillic or Greek
Both scripts are in the character set, so non-Latin text inside code keeps the same width.

Fonts that pair with Anonymous Pro

Inter Sans Serif

Anonymous Pro is monospace and Inter is sans serif (9 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Alice Serif

Anonymous Pro is monospace and Alice is serif (1 weight): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

News Cycle Sans Serif

Anonymous Pro is monospace and News Cycle is sans serif (2 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.

Bitmaps for 10 to 13 ppem
The official description states that the Regular and Bold styles include embedded bitmaps for the smallest sizes. Whether they are used depends on the rendering system.
Slashed zero by default
